KENNEWICK, WASHINGTON – March 7, 2023 – Cascade Natural Gas has signed an agreement with Pine Creek RNG to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) to be produced from the Horn Rapids Landfill and Lamb Weston’s agricultural biogas recovery system, both located in Richland, Washington.
The project will capture raw gas produced at the landfill and Lamb Weston’s agricultural biogas recovery system, which is currently being flared, and process the gas to be used in Cascade’s distribution system, which in turn reduces the amount of traditional natural gas used by Cascade’s customers.
The project consists of installing two interconnect facilities and adding natural gas infrastructure to allow RNG onto Cascade’s system. Construction is underway with RNG expected to be flowing at the end of 2023.
“This is an exciting project for Cascade in that not only will we be able to bring renewable natural gas onto our system, but also reduce the amount of gas currently being flared,” said Nicole Kivisto, president and CEO of Cascade. “This is a positive project for all involved.”
It’s expected that the landfill and Lamb Weston’s agricultural biogas recovery system will produce more than 2.5 million therms of RNG annually, which is equivalent to the natural gas used by approximately 4,173 Washington homes each year.
“We are proud to contribute to this project, which puts the renewable gas we are producing to beneficial use right here in the region,” said Mark Schuster, vice president of Lamb Weston.
“This project fulfills the city of Richland’s mission to provide cost-effective services while protecting Richland’s natural environment. We are very pleased to join our private industry partners to use a waste stream managed by the city to generate revenue that offsets operating costs at the city’s landfill, reduces air pollution, and makes a positive contribution to our state’s climate change goals,” said Joe Schiessl, deputy city manager.
