Cascade Voluntary Renewable Natural Gas Program

Washington customers interested in replacing any portion of their natural gas usage with renewable natural gas (RNG) may choose to participate in Cascade’s Voluntary RNG program.

What is renewable natural gas or RNG?

RNG is a gas consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons derived from the decomposition of organic material in landfills, wastewater treatment facilities, and anaerobic digesters.1

Washington Voluntary RNG Program

Washington customers can offset any portion of their natural gas usage by purchasing renewable natural gas (RNG). Complete the form below to begin your monthly subscription to purchase RNG, a carbon-neutral energy source. Alternatively, you can download the form in English or Spanish and email a completed copy to [email protected].

Participation in the RNG program is voluntary. You may change or cancel your monthly RNG purchase at any time by calling Cascade Customer Service at 888-522-1130.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the RNG come from?

Cascade purchases RNG or renewable thermal credits (RTCs)—or the environmental attributes derived from RNG— from local biomethane projects including the Horn Rapids Landfill and Lamb Weston.

What are renewable thermal credits or RTCs?

RTCs are a market-based instrument that represents the environmental benefits associated with renewable energy.

What do I receive if I purchase RNG from this program?

When you purchase a block of RNG, Cascade purchases the therm equivalency in RNG or RNG derived RTCs and, in both cases, the RTCs are retired on your behalf. The RNG may be injected into Cascade’s distribution system, thereby reducing the needed natural gas on the system. Cascade cannot guarantee that RNG will be delivered directly to your home, but your purchase is an investment in offsetting your traditional natural gas usage.

How much RNG should I purchase?

This is your choice. Your RNG purchase does not need to match your monthly usage. You may purchase more or less therm equivalence of RNG than you purchase in natural gas. If you want to review your natural gas usage to make an informed RNG subscription choice, a usage graph for each month is available on Online Account Services at customer.cngc.com. You can also find your monthly usage on your monthly bill. Whether or not you correlate your usage and your RNG purchase is up to you and is dependent upon your goals. Whatever amount you sign up for is what you will purchase each month unless you call Cascade to change or cancel your service.

How is RNG billed?

RNG is billed on your regular monthly bill along with your natural gas and monthly basic service charge. The RNG charge is listed as a separate line item.

What am I getting for $7.32 per block?

Program participants are offsetting the equivalent of 4 therms of traditional natural gas for each block purchased.
