Natural Gas Safety DURING Flooding

Flooding can impair the effectiveness of safety devices installed in natural gas appliances and equipment. If your house has flooded and any of your natural gas appliances have contact with water, they are not safe to use. Please DO NOT turn off or attempt to turn off natural gas service at your meter. If conditions warrant, Cascade will turn off service to the area. Your natural gas service to your home or business should not be affected by flood waters. Report any natural gas lines exposed by flooding or call Cascade Natural Gas for natural gas emergencies or if you have any concerns about your service being affected by flooding.

If your home or business has experienced flooding, and you would like your natural gas service disconnected after flood waters have receded, call Cascade Natural Gas at 888-522-1130. DO NOT attempt to turn your natural gas service back on yourself.

Avoid flooded basements because energized wiring or outlets below the water line may pose a hazard. Natural gas services in a flooded basement may also pose a danger.

LEAVE THE HOUSE IMMEDIATELY IF YOU SMELL NATURAL GAS. Do not turn lights on or off or use any other electrical switches – including garage door openers. Do not open any windows or doors other than the ones you pass through on your way out. Do not use a cell phone or any other phone while still in the house. Go to a neighbor’s house or other safe place away from your home to call 911 and Cascade Natural Gas’ emergency number 888-522-1130.

Natural Gas Safety After Flooding

Flooding can damage natural gas equipment and create serious safety hazards. If your home or business has been affected by a flood, follow these important steps:

  • Stay Safe First
    • Do not attempt to turn on or relight natural gas appliances yourself.
    • Avoid standing water near gas meters, appliances or pipelines.
  • Check for Signs of a Gas Leak
    • If you smell gas (a rotten egg odor), hear hissing or see bubbles in standing water:
      • Leave the area immediately.
      • Call 911 and then Cascade, 888-522-1130, from a safe location.
    • Have Equipment Inspected
      • Floodwater can damage gas meters, regulators, piping and appliances—even if they look fine.
      • Internal components like burners, valves and controls may corrode or fail after exposure to water.
      • Before using any natural gas appliance that was or may have been impacted by flooding,
        • Contact a licensed plumber or HVAC technician experienced with natural gas systems. They will check for leaks, clean or replace damaged parts and confirm safe operation.
        • Call Cascade, 888-522-1130, we may also need to inspect the meter and service line for damage.
      • Restoration of Service
        • If your gas service was shut off during the flood, do not attempt to turn it back on yourself.
          • Cascade will restore service only after:
            • A qualified professional certifies that all appliances and piping are safe.
            • The meter and regulator are inspected and cleared for use.
          • This process ensures your system is free of leaks and operating safely before gas is reintroduced.
        • Never Attempt to make repairs yourself.
        • Do not try to clean, dry or restart appliances yourself. This can lead to dangerous conditions, including fire or explosion.
